David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, created in marble between 1501 and 1504 by the Italian artist Michelangelo and housed in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence. Widely considered a masterpiece of world sculpture, it is one of the emblems of Italy. The work portrays the biblical hero preparing to face Goliath. The cap and barrel are made of white celluloid with a silver band depicting David, long considered the ideal of male beauty in art (just as Botticelli's Venus is considered the canon of female beauty). The silver clip resembles a chisel: it was thanks to his tireless work with hammer and chisel that the great Renaissance artist managed to retain the flexibility of his hands until the last days of his life.
